Brian C. Kincaid is changing the wine industry in Ohio. As the state’s first Black enologist, he aims to make wine more inclusive and accessible. With a focus on education and approachability, Kincaid is breaking down the intimidating barriers of the wine world.
Making Wine More Approachable for Everyone
Kincaid understands how pretentious the wine industry can feel to outsiders. Many people see wine as a symbol of social and economic status. Kincaid wants to change this perception. Through his Instagram, he shares educational videos and wine reviews. His goal is simple: show people that anyone can enjoy wine without needing a specific status or background.
“Wine doesn’t really have a face anymore,” Kincaid says. “It’s all about enjoying it and the moment you share with others.”
From Jazz Musician to Enologist
Before becoming an enologist, Kincaid was a full-time jazz musician, playing the clarinet. His career shift came after he partnered with the late Mansfield Frazier, owner of Chateau Hough vineyard. Frazier encouraged Kincaid to study enology at Kent State University’s Ashtabula campus, the first in Ohio to offer such programs.
Kincaid graduated in 2023 and has not looked back since. His journey is a testament to following unexpected paths and creating lasting legacies.
Continuing Mansfield Frazier’s Legacy
Mansfield Frazier, a mentor to Kincaid, was passionate about creating opportunities in the wine industry. Kincaid wants to build on Frazier’s work and keep his vision alive. He spent a summer selling salads and wine at Chateau Hough, a pivotal experience that set him on his current path.
“[Mansfield] was very adamant about me completing school and doing something great for generations,” Kincaid recalls.
Supporting Black and Woman-Owned Wineries
Kincaid highlights Black- and woman-owned wineries in Northeast Ohio, promoting diversity in the industry. His top picks include Chateau Hough, Zesty Compass, 2 You Wine, Vitamin Kandie, and Amani Vine Winery. These choices reflect his mission to uplift underrepresented voices in winemaking.
Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Inclusion
Kincaid’s story is just beginning. He continues to educate and inspire through his social media and community involvement. His dream is to create a wine culture where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their background.
