“I want to see more growth in North Huntsville,” she says. “My focus is primarily going to be on economic development, curb appeal, and people. District One should be a place where people want to come back to, where they feel they can thrive.”
Watkins believes that, by investing in the community, she can turn District One into a vibrant area for all residents. Her dedication to the neighborhood is clear, as she chose to stay in North Huntsville even when others moved away. “I believed in the community, so I stayed,” Watkins explains.
Breaking Barriers with Education and Diversity
Watkins’ journey to the City Council is grounded in the values she learned while growing up. She attended J.O. Johnson High School, which was the first racially integrated school in Huntsville. Watkins credits her time there for shaping her belief in the power of diversity.
“Going to that school and seeing such diversity opened up my eyes to a world of different things,” Watkins reflects. “Diversity is important, because when you work with people from different cultures and backgrounds, you learn to understand each other better.”
Her educational experiences fostered her commitment to serving the people of Huntsville, where she has deep ties. Watkins believes that understanding different cultures and perspectives is essential to effective leadership.
Serving as a Role Model for Future Generations
As Huntsville’s first Black female City Council member, Watkins hopes to inspire the next generation of leaders. She believes that representation matters and that her role can motivate others to pursue leadership positions, regardless of their background.
“I am proud to be the first African American female on the council, but I hope I’m not the last,” she says. “I want to set an example for young women and people of color, showing them that they, too, can be part of the decision-making process for their communities.”
