Orin Scott Hamilton, the first African American police chief in Austell’s history, has decided to step down after 2.5 years of service. His decision to leave the position comes as a surprise to many, considering the significant strides he made during his tenure. Hamilton, a native of Cordele, Georgia, has had a long career in law enforcement. Before becoming the chief of Austell Police, he spent over 20 years with the Cobb County Police Department, starting as a patrol officer in 1995. Now, with his resignation, Hamilton has expressed a desire to spend more time with his family and reflect on his next chapter.
