Rep. Lisa Demuth, a Republican from Cold Spring, has made history by becoming the first Black woman and first Republican woman to serve as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. This momentous occasion marks a significant step in both political and social progress within the state.
Rep. Demuth Sworn-in as Speaker of the Minnesota House
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Rep. Demuth was officially sworn in as Speaker. Her election comes after a weeks-long standoff in the Minnesota House. The deal that ended the impasse saw Demuth elected as the first person of color to hold the esteemed position.
“Being the first Black woman and the first Republican woman to serve as Speaker is an incredible honor,” Demuth said. She emphasized that she hopes her achievement will eventually no longer be viewed as unusual. “I want to be judged on my qualifications, not my race,” she added, expressing a desire for a future where such milestones are no longer surprises.
A History-Making Election
Demuth’s election to the role of House Speaker comes after serving as the minority caucus leader for the Republican Party in the previous legislative session. In the 2025 vote, Demuth was nominated by Rep. Spencer Igo (R-Wabana Township), and the vote concluded with a party-line result of 67-65, solidifying her position.
Although Rep. Kelly Moller (DFL-Shoreview) nominated Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) for the position, the move was largely symbolic, as the DFL party did not have enough votes to secure a win. Demuth’s leadership marks a new chapter in Minnesota’s political history, with her holding the House Speaker’s gavel as the state continues to evolve toward greater inclusion.
The Power-Sharing Agreement
Rep. Demuth’s election as Speaker also comes at a time of political tension. Following the standoff, Democrats and Republicans reached a power-sharing agreement. Under the deal, Republicans control House committees with a one-seat advantage. However, a special election for District 40B could lead to a 67-67 tie, at which point committees will be co-chaired by both parties.
This agreement highlights the ongoing negotiation between the two parties, and Demuth’s election is a crucial element in moving the legislative process forward. The power-sharing arrangement will continue until a majority of 68 members is reached by either party.
Looking Ahead: Demuth’s Leadership
Rep. Demuth’s election to Speaker represents a new era for the Minnesota House of Representatives. While she is proud of her place in history, Demuth is committed to focusing on her leadership capabilities, saying, “It is my qualifications and leadership that should matter most.”
As the first Black woman and first Republican woman to hold this prestigious position, Demuth is breaking new ground while also pushing for a future where such accomplishments are no longer groundbreaking. Her tenure as Speaker is expected to bring new perspectives and leadership to the Minnesota legislature.
