University of Washington Appoints Robert J. Jones as First African American President, Marking a Historic Leadership Milestone

The University of Washington (UW) has made a significant decision by naming Robert J. Jones as its next president. Jones, who is currently the Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will become UW’s 34th president when he assumes office in August. This historic appointment marks the first time a Black individual has held the position at UW, making it a milestone for the university and a meaningful moment in higher education leadership.

“I am honored to be joining the University of Washington and excited to lead this extraordinary public university in its mission serving students, families, and communities across Washington and beyond,” Jones said after his appointment. His leadership promises to continue shaping UW’s impact as a public institution.

A Transformative Career in Higher Education

Robert J. Jones has an extensive background in higher education, having served as the president of the University at Albany from 2013 to 2016. His upcoming role at UW will be his third time leading a public research university. Before becoming Chancellor at the University of Illinois, he developed a reputation for fostering academic excellence, inclusion, and innovation.

Jones’s journey to this historic position is rooted in his educational background, which includes a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Fort Valley State College in Georgia, a master’s degree in crop physiology from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate in crop physiology from the University of Missouri. His impressive academic credentials have supported his transformative work as a leader.

A Rigorous Search and Selection Process

The University of Washington began its search for a new president after Ana Mari Cauce, the current president, announced she would step down in June. The Board of Regents reviewed over 500 potential candidates before narrowing the list down to 25, then 13, finalists. After thorough interviews, Robert J. Jones emerged as the top choice to lead the university.

“His inspiring and barrier-breaking personal journey, highly regarded scholarship, and decades of transformative leadership convinced us that Chancellor Jones is the ideal person to build upon President Ana Mari Cauce’s legacy,” said Blaine Tamaki, Chair of the UW Board of Regents.

A Commitment to UW’s Mission and Legacy

Jones’s appointment comes at a time when UW is expanding its mission to serve students and communities across Washington and beyond. Ana Mari Cauce, the outgoing president, expressed her excitement about the new chapter under Jones’s leadership. “I am thrilled for our University to welcome him as our newest Husky,” she said, highlighting Jones’s transformative approach to higher education.

The university is eager to see how Jones will continue to foster growth and inclusion, building on Cauce’s accomplishments while charting new directions for UW’s future.
