Toyin Tofade Pioneers Innovation as the First Black Woman to Lead a U.S. Pharmacy College, Reshaping Education and Leadership

Transforming Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS)

Dr. Toyin Tofade took office as the president of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) in July 2022, marking a significant milestone in academia. She is the first Black woman to hold this position at any U.S. pharmacy college. Since stepping into this role, she has initiated major reforms, ensuring a brighter future for the institution and its students.

Under her leadership, ACPHS has introduced groundbreaking changes. A bold new strategic plan has been implemented, setting a clear vision for the college’s growth. In March 2024, ACPHS Online was launched, expanding access to quality pharmaceutical education. Academic units were restructured to enhance efficiency, and leadership programs were developed to nurture future industry leaders.

Record-Breaking Enrollment Growth and New Programs

Tofade’s impact is evident in the school’s enrollment figures. Between 2022 and 2024, total applications increased by 18.58%, while deposits grew by 35.03%. Transfer admissions surged by an astonishing 714.29%, and first-year PharmD deposits skyrocketed by 210%. Additionally, industrial fellowship positions for graduates doubled, offering more career opportunities for students.

Her leadership also ushered in the largest academic expansion in ACPHS history. Seven new degree programs were approved, including bachelor’s programs in health sciences, psychology, forensic science, and biology. Master’s programs in biomedical sciences and cytotechnology were also introduced, positioning ACPHS as a leader in pharmacy education.

Enhancing Student Experience and Expanding Partnerships

Tofade has placed a strong emphasis on improving student life. ACPHS has gained increased media recognition, while its athletic programs have excelled on the national stage, securing championships in men’s track & field and women’s soccer. Her administration has strengthened relationships with local, national, and international organizations, further enhancing the student experience.

The institution now collaborates with various industries and research facilities to provide students with real-world exposure. These partnerships open doors to hands-on learning opportunities, mentorships, and job placements for ACPHS graduates.

A Trailblazer in Pharmacy Leadership

Before joining ACPHS, Dr. Tofade had an illustrious career in pharmacy education and leadership. She served as Dean and Professor at Howard University College of Pharmacy and held key roles at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She also worked as a clinical specialist at UNC hospitals and served as Director of Pharmacotherapy Services at Wake AHEC.

Her influence extends beyond academia. She was the first Black woman to serve as President of the International Pharmacy Federation (FIP) Academic Pharmacy Section. Her contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy have been widely recognized. She has also participated in major policy advocacy initiatives, shaping the future of pharmacy education and practice.

Recognitions and Awards

Dr. Tofade’s dedication has earned her numerous accolades. She has been named to the Albany Business Review’s Power 50 Executive list for two consecutive years. Other notable awards include:

  • The 2022 Donald E. Francke Medal from ASHP
  • The 2021 Distinguished Service Award from UNC Pharmacy Alumni Association
  • The 2019 Fred M. Eckel Pharmacy Leadership Award
  • The 2018 Distinguished Service Award from NAPPSA

These honors highlight her commitment to excellence, leadership, and innovation in pharmacy education.

Education and Professional Development

Dr. Tofade’s academic background is as impressive as her career. She holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) from Obafemi Awolowo University. She later earned an MS in Pharmacy Practice and a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from UNC Chapel Hill. To further sharpen her leadership skills, she completed executive programs at Harvard Kennedy School and Penn State University.

Her academic and professional journey reflects a commitment to continuous growth and leadership development. She serves as an inspiration to students and professionals in the field of pharmacy worldwide.
