Cameron Leads Wake Forest to Historic National Championship Match
Wake Forest University’s women’s soccer team made history in 2024, reaching the national title match for the first time. This incredible achievement came under the leadership of associate head coach Brittany Cameron. She is the first Black woman to hold this position and guide a team to the national championship.
Cameron’s coaching helped the Demon Deacons reach new heights, breaking records and setting milestones throughout the season. Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed as she was named Assistant Coach of the Year at the Black Soccer Legends Awards.
“I’m so honored to receive this award,” Cameron said. “This season has been amazing. It’s a privilege to help young women grow as athletes and people.”
A Season of Records and Growth Under Cameron’s Leadership
Cameron’s coaching expertise shone brightest during the 2024 season. She played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s defense, which became one of the best in the nation. Wake Forest conceded only seven goals in ACC play, the fewest in the conference.
Goalkeeper Valentina Amaral, a standout player under Cameron’s guidance, achieved the lowest goals-against average in the program’s history (.620). Amaral credited Cameron’s dedication, saying, “Her passion and leadership push us to be better every day. I’m grateful to have her as my coach.”
Beyond defense, Cameron coached five players to All-ACC honors, with three earning All-American recognition. Her influence extended beyond tactics, inspiring players to excel on and off the field.
Breaking Barriers in College and International Soccer
Cameron’s journey to becoming a trailblazing coach started long before her time at Wake Forest. In 2022, she became the only Black woman associate head coach in Power Five conferences.
Her impact isn’t limited to college soccer. Cameron also made history as the first Black coach to represent the United States U-20 national team at a World Cup qualifier, serving as a goalkeeper coach.
These accomplishments reflect her determination to pave the way for future generations. “I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their passions and believe in their abilities,” she shared.
A Successful Playing Career Fuels Her Coaching Vision
Before coaching, Cameron had an impressive professional playing career. As a goalkeeper, she played for eight years and was a finalist for the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2015.
During her time with Sky Blue FC, she led the league in saves and minutes played, showcasing her skill and resilience. Her experiences on the field now guide her coaching philosophy, emphasizing hard work, teamwork, and personal growth.
Looking Ahead: Cameron’s Vision for the Future
Cameron’s historic role and achievements are only the beginning. She continues to mentor players, push boundaries, and contribute to the growth of soccer. Her influence extends far beyond wins and titles, as she shapes the next generation of leaders in the sport.
As Wake Forest celebrates its historic season, Cameron remains focused on building a program that inspires athletes and fans alike. “The future is bright,” she said. “We’re just getting started.”
