Port Huron has reached a historic milestone. Anita R. Ashford has become the city’s first African-American mayor, making waves in Michigan politics. Her election marks a new era of leadership, with a focus on inclusion, growth, and community improvement.
With nearly 6,000 votes, Ashford defeated Pauline Repp, who held the role for 15 years. Ashford’s victory brings hope and excitement to the city’s residents.
A Vision for Housing, Schools, and Community Growth
As mayor, Ashford plans to address Port Huron’s pressing issues. Housing improvements and population growth top her agenda.
“We are tackling the housing issue head-on,” Ashford shared. “Better living conditions and new developments are already underway.” Current projects include housing on the south side of town and new subdivisions on the north side.
Ashford also aims to boost Port Huron’s population by enhancing schools, public safety, and city infrastructure. “I want people to feel a sense of belonging here,” she added.
A Life Dedicated to Community and Change
Born and raised in Port Huron, Ashford’s dedication to her hometown is lifelong. She began volunteering as a teenager, organizing events for children and community groups.
Her passion for unity and progress stems from her upbringing. “I always wanted to bring people together,” Ashford recalled. “Even as a child, I sought ways to make a difference.”
Her early activism led to celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Port Huron. Partnering with her church and the NAACP, Ashford helped honor King’s legacy, fostering unity in her community.
Breaking Barriers in Politics and Beyond
Ashford’s political journey began unexpectedly. At a rally on Port Huron’s south side, she was invited to speak. Her commanding presence captured attention and launched her political career.
With mentorship from influential leaders like Maryann Mahaffey, Ashford worked alongside Detroit legends such as Mayors Coleman A. Young and Dennis Archer. Her political involvement has spanned two decades, during which she has consistently championed human rights and inclusion.
From Local Activist to National Security Officer
Ashford’s remarkable career extends beyond local government. In the late 1990s, her leadership skills earned her a role as a National Security Officer for the NAACP.
At a Denver convention, she impressed leaders by calming a chaotic crowd. This moment led to her hiring, where she safeguarded icons like Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jackson.
Her community-focused leadership continued as Vice President of the Michigan Municipal League. Ashford was the first African-American woman in this role, earning the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award.
Building a Legacy of Leadership and Unity
Ashford’s influence reaches far beyond Port Huron. She has held leadership positions with organizations like SEMCOG and the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.
Her efforts helped establish the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial near the Blue Water Bridge. This initiative honors African-American heroes while promoting local history and unity.
As Port Huron’s new mayor, Ashford is ready to build on this legacy. Her historic election is just the beginning of her journey to create a more inclusive and thriving city.
