Maryland Delegate Shaneka Henson is on the brink of making history. Nominated by the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee on January 4, she could soon become the first Black woman to represent Anne Arundel County in the Maryland State Senate. This significant milestone highlights Henson’s dedication to justice and her community.
With a vote of 10 to 9, Henson narrowly edged out her competitor, Delegate Dana Jones, for the nomination. The decision now rests with Maryland’s governor, who will officially confirm the appointment.
A Vision for Advocacy and Change
If approved, Henson plans to focus on several pressing issues, including renter protections, childcare gaps, and maternal health.
“There are so many renters and tenants struggling with mold in their homes,” Henson said. She explained that the consequences of poor housing conditions affect children’s health and families’ quality of life.
To address this, Henson has already worked with experts on a plan to create statewide standards for mold remediation. “We’re excited to move forward with these recommendations,” she added.
A Historic Win for Representation
Henson’s nomination is a moment of pride for many in Anne Arundel County. Reflecting on the achievement, she said, “I thought about every Black woman here who was qualified for this job but didn’t get the chance.”
Chairwoman of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins, praised Henson’s victory. “Her nomination shows progress and promises even greater change ahead,” she said.
Henson’s leadership will mark a turning point for her county and inspire other women of color to pursue leadership roles.
A Commitment to Serve Anne Arundel County
Henson has consistently demonstrated her commitment to her constituents. Her legislative work highlights her dedication to improving living conditions and advocating for underrepresented communities.
Her efforts to close childcare gaps and enhance maternal health outcomes are examples of her broader vision for justice. If confirmed, Henson will continue to work tirelessly to ensure Maryland’s families have the support they need.
