The City of Lawton will honor Raymond Gates, its first Black firefighter, with a special street dedication ceremony. Gates, who joined the Lawton Fire Department in 1971, paved the way for diversity in the city’s public services.
The dedication event is scheduled for January 3, 2025, at 1 p.m. in the Ranch Oak Addition. Two honorary street signs bearing his name, “Mr. Raymond L. Gates,” will be unveiled at key intersections. Following the ceremony, guests can gather at Rose Hill Church for light refreshments.
A Historic Ceremony to Recognize a Trailblazer
The ceremony will unveil street signs at the intersections of SW Salinas Drive and SW Sedalia Avenue and SW Chisholm Trail Boulevard and SW Sedalia Avenue. These signs mark a significant milestone in honoring Raymond Gates’ contributions.
Community members, family, and friends are invited to the event. Rose Hill Church, located at 1212 SW Tennessee Avenue, will host a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. after the unveiling.
City officials highlighted the importance of Gates’ legacy. “His contributions continue to inspire the Lawton community,” a city representative shared.
Raymond Gates’ Journey in the Lawton Fire Department
Raymond Gates joined the Lawton Fire Department on September 1, 1971, becoming the city’s first Black firefighter. Over two decades, he earned the rank of Assistant Fire Marshal and attended advanced fire training in Oklahoma City.
Gates retired in 1991 after 20 years of service. His dedication and leadership set a standard for excellence in the department, opening doors for future generations.
His legacy continues through his nephew, Anthony Hall, who currently serves in the Lawton Fire Department. Though Hall is deployed with the Army National Guard until December 2025, his presence underscores the lasting impact of Gates’ trailblazing career.

The upcoming street dedication serves as a reminder of Gates’ groundbreaking achievements and commitment to public service. His story reflects resilience, leadership, and the importance of representation in community roles.
