Santa Monica is preparing to honor Lloyd C. Allen, a remarkable public servant and entrepreneur, with a commemorative plaque. Allen, celebrated as the city’s first Black Recreation and Parks Commissioner, has dedicated decades to improving his community.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 21, at 3 p.m. in Virginia Avenue Park. Attendees can find the event near the Thelma Terry building at 2200 Virginia Avenue. This free gathering will feature speeches by Mayor Lana Negrete and Lloyd C. Allen himself, now 103 years old. Light refreshments will also be provided.
Mayor Negrete expressed her admiration, saying, “Mr. Allen’s legacy is seen and felt every day in Santa Monica, and it is truly an honor to acknowledge his decades of service and contributions to our community.”
Honoring a Trailblazing Public Servant
The plaque at Virginia Avenue Park will highlight Allen’s role in shaping Santa Monica’s recreational spaces. His efforts played a critical role in the creation of Virginia Avenue Park, a cherished community hub.
Allen served as the city’s first Black Recreation and Parks Commissioner, a position where he championed inclusion and accessibility. His leadership helped establish programs and spaces that brought people of all backgrounds together.
The decision to honor Allen came after a 2024 directive by the Santa Monica City Council. This recognition celebrates not just his contributions to recreation but also his wider influence on the city’s culture.
A Legacy of Entrepreneurship and Service
In addition to his public service, Allen made history as a pioneering Black entrepreneur in the late 1950s. He founded several businesses that supported the local community. His ventures, including Allen Maintenance, Allen Janitorial Supplies and Equipment, and Allen Vacuum Repairs, all operated from 400 Pico Boulevard.
Allen’s entrepreneurial spirit complemented his dedication to public service. His businesses provided employment opportunities and essential services, strengthening the Santa Monica economy.
When asked about his work, Allen shared, “My commitment has always been to create spaces and opportunities where everyone, regardless of background, can come together, thrive, and feel a sense of belonging.”
