Historic Runoff: Gonzales Set to Elect First Black Mayor

Runoff Election Promises Gonzales Its First Black Mayor as Timothy Riley and Kemlyn Bailey Lomas Compete for Historic Win

The city of Gonzales, Louisiana, stands on the brink of a historic moment as two Democratic candidates head to a December runoff election. Either Timothy “Tim” Riley or Kemlyn Bailey Lomas will become the city’s first Black mayor.

Historic Significance of Mayoral Runoff

Both candidates acknowledge the groundbreaking nature of this election for Gonzales. The December 7 runoff guarantees a milestone victory, regardless of the outcome.

“Yes it would be historic, but I just care about people. We all are human, we are all God’s greatest creation,” Riley remarked. Meanwhile, Lomas emphasized the potential for a double milestone: “History has been made with the fact that we will have an African-American mayor, but I’m trying to make it a double whammy – African American and first female.”

Candidates Intensify Campaign Strategies

The candidates are ramping up their efforts to reach undecided voters and ensure strong turnout for the runoff. Riley’s campaign focuses on mobilizing previously inactive voters.

Lomas has taken an innovative approach by opening her campaign headquarters to all voters. “I’ve engaged with you on your front door, so I want you to come see me at mine. Let’s see me at my office doing what I do – watch me work,” she explained.

Voter Engagement and Turnout Challenges

Both candidates recognize the challenge of maintaining voter momentum after the general election. They are implementing new strategies to connect with undecided voters.

“The voters that didn’t get out, we’re going to get them out. Voters that would normally stay home they’re going to go and vote for us because the voters are inspired,” Riley stated confidently.

Political Support and Endorsements

Former mayoral candidate Terance Irvin, who didn’t advance to the runoff, remains open to endorsing either candidate. “They’re excellent individuals and at this point in time, I’m waiting to hear from them if they’re interested in endorsement,” Irvin said.

The historic runoff election on December 7 will determine who will lead Gonzales into its next chapter, marking a significant milestone in the city’s history.
