From Humble Beginnings to Educational Leadership | Early Life and Struggles
Tony Thurmond’s journey began in poverty in San Jose, California. As the son of a Black father and Panamanian immigrant mother, he faced significant challenges early in life. After losing his mother to cancer at age six, Thurmond and his brother moved to Philadelphia to live with their cousin.
Their cousin, Diana Krajewski, worked multiple jobs as a nursing assistant and campus security officer. “We relied on food stamps, government cheese and other public assistance, yet she raised us as her own children,” Thurmond recalls. “She saved my life.”
Temple University Years Shape Future Leader | Education and Early Career
At Temple University, Thurmond balanced multiple jobs while serving in student government. He worked at UPS and McDonald’s, earning $3.35 per hour. His role as student body president sparked his interest in politics.
“Seeing those actions made me realize how powerful politics can be in changing the world for the better,” Thurmond explains. After graduating with a psychology degree, he pursued a career in social work, helping abused and neglected children.
California’s Education Champion | Public Service Impact
Currently serving as California’s 28th state superintendent, Thurmond has achieved remarkable results. He secured a historic $4.13 billion investment in community schools. Additionally, he launched the Black Student Achievement Taskforce to address systemic racism.
Through his leadership, California implemented the nation’s first statewide Universal Meals Program. He also helped secure $7 billion to expand low-cost internet access, distributing over one million devices to low-income households.
Vision for California’s Future | Campaign Priorities
Thurmond’s gubernatorial campaign focuses on pressing issues affecting Californians. His priorities include raising wages, increasing affordable housing, and strengthening public schools. Furthermore, he plans to build 2.2 million affordable housing units for teachers.
“I intend to use my ability to overcome difficult circumstances to help the people of California,” Thurmond states. “I’ve never felt more aligned with the mission of serving the people than I do now.”
