The Collyhurst-born midfielder netted the decisive goal against Middlesbrough with just eight minutes remaining. Though the crowd was notably small that day, the significance of his achievement transcended the moment.
Moses followed Dennis Walker’s footsteps as United’s second black player. His goal-scoring feat, however, established a new milestone in the club’s rich history.
A Midfielder’s Journey of Resilience
Between 1981 and 1988, Moses appeared in 199 games for Manchester United. Though primarily known for his toughness, he possessed an underrated passing ability.
The talented midfielder often played alongside powerhouse personalities Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins. His adaptable style earned comparisons to Liverpool’s Sammy Lee from manager Ron Atkinson.
Battling Through Adversity
“He has taken some knocks that have bordered on assault – but you never hear him complain,” teammate Ray Wilkins once remarked. Moses faced numerous challenges, including harsh treatment from referees.
Unfortunately, injuries hampered his career progression. An ankle problem forced him to miss the 1986 FA Cup victory over Everton. He also missed the 1983 final due to suspension.

Moses earned an England call-up in 1984, though injury prevented him from making his international debut. His contributions often went underappreciated during his playing days.
The midfielder featured in Alex Ferguson’s first-ever United team selection. Sadly, persistent injuries forced his retirement in 1988 after a farewell match against Wimbledon.
