In a groundbreaking move, Dr. Edwin Bogonko has been elected as the 158th president of the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA). This historic appointment marks the first time in the organization’s 170-year history that a person of color has taken on this crucial leadership role.

Kenyan-Born Physician Breaks Barriers in Minnesota Healthcare Leadership

Dr. Bogonko, a physician of Kenyan origin, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the MMA. His election was unanimous, showcasing the widespread support he enjoys among his peers.

Dan Hauser, the MMA’s Director of Communication and Education, praised Dr. Bogonko’s engagement and friendly demeanor. “Dr. Bogonko’s approachability and dedication to the profession have made him a natural choice for this position,” Hauser remarked.

From Kisii to Minneapolis: Dr. Bogonko’s Journey to Medical Leadership

Dr. Bogonko’s path to medicine began in Kisii, southwestern Kenya. His younger brother’s heart condition, which required frequent hospital visits, sparked his passion for becoming a doctor.

“Growing up, I witnessed unnecessary suffering due to a shortage of medical professionals,” Dr. Bogonko reflected. “This experience shaped my commitment to healthcare.”

After completing his medical degree at the University of Nairobi in 1993, Dr. Bogonko practiced in Kenya until 1999. He then moved to the United States, where he continued his mission to help vulnerable communities.

MMA Involvement and Rise to Presidency

Dr. Bogonko’s involvement with the MMA began in 2010. He quickly became an integral member, serving on various committees and assuming leadership positions.

His dedication culminated in his role as Chair of the MMA’s Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2023. This position paved the way for his presidential appointment.

Key Priorities for Dr. Bogonko’s Term as MMA President

During his inauguration at the MMA’s Empowering Physicians Conference in Minneapolis, Dr. Bogonko outlined several key priorities for his term. These include:

  1. Limiting the abuse of prior authorization
  2. Promoting physician wellness
  3. Strengthening rural healthcare networks
  4. Expanding mental health services
  5. Protecting elderly patients from having to choose between medical care and basic necessities

As the MMA’s principal spokesperson, Dr. Bogonko will advocate for physicians at the State Capitol and champion policies to enhance healthcare across Minnesota.

Beyond his work with the MMA, Dr. Bogonko is actively involved in community initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes for underserved populations.
