Brian “Killah B” Bates has made history. The talented producer became the first Black artist to top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with Beyoncé’s hit single “Texas Hold ‘Em”. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in country music.
Bates co-wrote and produced the track for Beyoncé’s latest album, “Cowboy Carter”. The song’s success has not only broken records but also sparked conversations about representation in country music.
From Chicago to Country Music Stardom
Killah B’s journey to the top of the country charts began in Chicago. Raised by his grandparents due to his parents’ struggles with addiction, Bates found solace and inspiration in music.
“My grandfather was a jazz musician in Chicago,” Bates shared. “He saw that I had musical abilities, and he invested in me and poured into me.”
This early exposure to music set the stage for Bates’ future success. He became a classically trained pianist and later taught himself to play the drums.
A Diverse Musical Background
Despite his current success in country music, Bates’ musical roots are diverse. He grew up listening to a wide range of genres, from country and classic rock to R&B.
“My father would play country, classic rock and old school ’70s R&B Dusties all day,” Bates recalled. “I would study Luke Bryan, the Dixie Chicks and more. I studied so many genres, and it was something I loved.”
This eclectic musical background prepared Bates for his eventual crossover into country music.
Making History with Beyoncé
The collaboration with Beyoncé came about nearly two years before the release of “Texas Hold ‘Em”. A friend connected Bates with the singer’s representatives, who were immediately impressed with his work.
“She was instantly blown away, and so she asked for the files,” Bates explained. After Beyoncé added her own touch to the track, the result was nothing short of spectacular.
The song’s release during a Super Bowl commercial created a buzz that quickly translated into chart-topping success.
Breaking Barriers in Country Music
Bates’ achievement highlights the often-overlooked contributions of Black artists to country music. He emphasized the genre’s roots in Black culture.
“Black people created the instruments that created country music, and we created the styling of country music,” Bates stated. “Black people don’t just have a place in country music, we are the forefront of country music.”
This historic moment serves as a reminder of the genre’s diverse origins and the importance of representation in the industry.
Looking to the Future
With this groundbreaking success under his belt, Killah B is setting his sights on even bigger goals. Fans can expect more country hits from the producer, as well as ventures into other genres.
“I have more country records that are coming out,” Bates revealed. “Expect me to do genres of music that people wouldn’t expect me to do. Expect me to dominate.”
