Kendall McManus-Thomas has shattered barriers by becoming the first Black male principal at Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans. This historic appointment marks a significant milestone for the prestigious institution and the local community.

Ben Franklin High School, renowned for its academic excellence, has taken a bold step forward. McManus-Thomas, affectionately known as Dr. Mac, now leads one of Louisiana’s top-ranked schools.
“I take it with pride knowing I represent so many amazing educators, my family and our community,” McManus-Thomas stated. His photo will soon join the lineup of former principals, making history in the process.
From New Orleans East to Educational Leadership
McManus-Thomas’ journey began in New Orleans East. He attended local public schools, including Sherwood Forest, Fannie C. Williams, and Warren Waston.
Despite facing challenges, including Hurricane Katrina during his senior year, McManus-Thomas remained focused on education. “I knew education was critical to a better life,” he reflected.
A Track Record of Educational Excellence
Ben Franklin High School boasts impressive statistics. With a 99% college attendance rate and a state ranking of sixth, the school sets high standards.
McManus-Thomas brings valuable experience to his new role. He previously served as principal at Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School, impacting numerous students across New Orleans.

“I hope that people are inspired and encouraged to trust the process,” McManus-Thomas said. He emphasizes the power of education and perseverance in achieving one’s goals.
