The Nigerian Army has promoted Second Lieutenant Oluchukwu Owowoh to the rank of Lieutenant. This historic promotion follows her groundbreaking graduation from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
Historic Promotion: Nigerian Army Recognizes Trailblazer
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, officiated the promotion ceremony on June 26. The event took place at the Nigerian Defence Academy Officer’s Mess and Golf Club.
Major General JO Ochai, NDA Commandant, praised Owowoh’s exceptional performance as a cadet. Senior military leaders, academics, and family members attended the celebration.
Breaking Barriers: First Nigerian Female Graduate of Sandhurst
Owowoh, 24, made history as the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the UK’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She completed 44 weeks of rigorous training with 134 other Officer Cadets.
The prestigious Sovereign’s Parade in London marked her graduation. King Charles was represented by Général d’armée Pierre SchilI, Chief of the French Army Staff.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Officers
Major General Ochai emphasized the significance of Owowoh’s achievement for young Nigerian women. He stated, “Lt. Owowoh’s success is a testament to the potential that lies within our young women.”
Owowoh’s journey demonstrates that determination and excellence can overcome barriers. Her success may inspire more women to pursue military careers in Nigeria.
A Legacy of Leadership: From Cadet to Lieutenant
Owowoh’s military career began six years ago at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State. She quickly rose through the ranks, holding several leadership positions.
As a cadet, she became a Cadet Lance Corporal, Cadet Sergeant, and Company Senior Under Officer. Owowoh was among the first females to hold the CSUO position at the academy.
Representing Nigeria on the Global Stage
Owowoh expressed her pride in representing Nigeria at Sandhurst. She said, “It is a profound honour to be the first Nigerian female officer to commission from the esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.”
She joins a distinguished list of Nigerian Sandhurst graduates. This includes former head of state Yakubu Gowon and Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence.
