De-Andrea Blaylock-Solar: Missouri’s First Black Certified Sex Therapist Pioneers Change in Mental Health and Sexuality Education

Breaking Barriers: Missouri’s Trailblazing Sex Therapist

De-Andrea Blaylock-Solar has etched her name in history as the first certified Black sex therapist in Missouri. Blaylock-Solar’s groundbreaking achievement not only shatters glass ceilings but also paves the way for a more inclusive and diverse approach to mental health and sexuality education.

“I always knew I wanted a career in relationship therapy,” said Blaylock-Solar. “But I wanted to add a twist to being a sex therapist by incorporating my perspectives as a Christian.”

Blaylock-Solar’s journey to becoming a certified sex therapist was not without its challenges. Initially hesitant due to the lack of representation in the field, she persevered and found acceptance within the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT).

Addressing Taboos and Misconceptions

As a licensed clinical social worker, Blaylock-Solar tackles a range of issues related to sexuality and relationships. From low libido to mismatched desires, she provides guidance to couples seeking to strengthen their intimacy. Moreover, she dispels the myth of “sex addiction,” emphasizing that excessive sexual behavior can be managed without abstinence.

“Don’t stop at 60,” she said. “There is an uptick in STI infections amongst older adults.”

Blaylock-Solar’s expertise extends to promoting safe sex practices, encouraging open communication and regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS.

Dismantling Harmful Narratives

Rooted in her Christian faith, Blaylock-Solar aims to dismantle negative ideologies surrounding sexuality that have been perpetuated by certain religious leaders. She believes in empowering individuals to embrace their sexuality as a gift from God, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

“How you show up in this world inclusive of your gender identity, inclusive of your sexuality. That’s a gift from God.”

By challenging harmful narratives and promoting healthy attitudes towards sexuality, Blaylock-Solar is not only providing essential therapy but also contributing to a much-needed cultural shift.

A Pioneering Voice for Change

Blaylock-Solar’s pioneering work as Missouri’s first Black certified sex therapist is a testament to her dedication and resilience.

Her intersectional approach, combining mental health and sexuality education with cultural and religious sensitivity, is paving the way for a more inclusive and empowering discourse on intimacy and relationships.
