Cedrick Frazier Takes the Helm as First Black Man to Lead Powerful Minnesota Budget Committee

Cedrick Frazier Steps Into Historic Leadership Role

Cedrick Frazier has stepped into a powerful new role as the first Black man to lead the Minnesota House Ways and Means Committee. This committee plays a major role in shaping and approving the state budget.

His appointment was announced by Zack Stephenson, the House DFL Caucus Leader, who praised Frazier’s leadership and reputation across the Legislature. The appointment also reflects growing calls for more inclusive leadership in top decision-making spaces.

“Rep. Frazier is an outstanding leader who is well respected throughout the Legislature. I am honored to appoint him as co-chair of the Ways and Means Committee,” Stephenson said in a statement.

A Powerful Committee Overseeing the State Budget

The Ways and Means Committee is one of the most influential committees in Minnesota politics. It oversees the state’s budget, allocates funds, and reviews spending priorities.

Frazier’s new leadership role places him at the center of critical economic and social policy decisions. Rep. Esther Agbaje will serve as the committee’s DFL vice chair.

Frazier shared his excitement and vision for this next chapter. “Our shared experience leading the House POCI Caucus proved we can deliver transformative legislation for historically marginalized communities whose voices have too often been excluded from the decision-making process,” he said. “Now, we bring that same dedication to the Ways and Means Committee.”

A Legacy of Leadership and Representation

The appointment comes after Stephenson was elected as the new DFL Caucus leader in September, leaving the co-chair seat open. Frazier’s new role marks a powerful moment of representation for Black leaders in state politics.

He has built a reputation as a strong advocate for equity, fairness, and opportunity. His leadership within the House POCI Caucus (People of Color and Indigenous Caucus) has been key in advancing policies that center underserved communities.

Frazier’s appointment also signals a continued push for broader participation in decisions shaping the state’s financial future. His presence at the helm of such a critical committee reflects a growing recognition of diverse voices in Minnesota’s leadership.

Looking Ahead to the Work Ahead

This new role comes at a time when budget decisions carry enormous weight for Minnesota’s economy and residents. The Ways and Means Committee will tackle big issues, from funding for education to healthcare and economic growth.

Frazier’s leadership style focuses on collaboration and inclusion. Lawmakers expect that he will use his platform to push for fair, thoughtful budgeting that reflects the needs of all communities.

His work will also likely build on past efforts to deliver meaningful change for historically underrepresented groups across the state.
