Athletic Bilbao appoints Inaki Williams as historic captain
Inaki Williams has been named the new captain of Athletic Club, becoming the first Black player to wear the armband in the club’s long history. The announcement marks a powerful moment for the Basque side and for Spanish football as a whole.
Williams, who has played over 400 matches for Athletic since his debut in 2014, replaces Oscar de Marcos as captain. The change follows the departure of longtime leader Iker Muniain, who left the club last summer after more than 15 years at San Mamés.
Williams reflects on his roots and meaning of captaincy
Speaking at a club-organised press event, Williams expressed pride and emotion about the appointment. “It means a lot,” he said. “It seems like a coincidence when my mother and father gave birth to me in Bilbao…but it’s destiny.”
Williams also spoke about the importance of representation. “We are lucky to represent many people who come from abroad to earn a living and be a reference,” he said. He stressed that his new role holds deep meaning for both the Basque Country and Spain.
A natural leader with deep club roots
Williams was seen as the natural choice to lead the team. Since his debut more than a decade ago, he has been one of the club’s most consistent and respected players. His leadership style combines experience, humility, and drive.
Fans have long admired Williams not just for his speed and stamina on the pitch, but also for his commitment to the club’s values. His rise to captain marks a moment of change while still respecting the team’s strong traditions.
Embracing diversity while upholding tradition
Athletic Club is well known for its policy of signing players with Basque ties. While that tradition continues, Williams’ appointment shows the club’s openness to new ideas and a broader view of identity.
His leadership opens the door for a more inclusive future. It also sends a message to young athletes from immigrant families: there is a place for everyone in top-tier football, even at clubs rooted in regional pride.
Champions League awaits under new captain
As the club prepares for the upcoming Champions League season, Williams will carry the hopes of fans into European competition. His appointment adds fresh energy and optimism to the team’s future.
Williams’ new role is not just symbolic—it’s strategic. With him at the helm, Athletic aims to balance success on the field with a commitment to unity, progress, and representation.
