Neil Reynolds to Lead the New Rochelle Police Department

Neil Reynolds has been named the new police commissioner for New Rochelle, New York. He is the first Black officer to lead the department since it was founded.

Reynolds has worked with the department for 31 years. He has served in many roles, most recently as deputy commissioner. He will officially step into the top role after the current commissioner, Robert Gazzola, retires on June 30.

Deep Roots in the Community

Reynolds sees the job as more than just a title. “New Rochelle is my home,” he said in a city statement. “I’ve dedicated myself to protecting and improving it for more than 30 years.”

He added that his focus will be on trust, safety, and stronger partnerships. “I’m ready to lead us into the next chapter with purpose, transparency, and a deep commitment to all the people of this city and its police officers.”

A Steady Climb Through the Ranks

Reynolds began his journey in the police department back in 1994. He started as a patrol officer and later became a DARE instructor and bicycle patrol officer. His career continued to grow as he served as a detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain.

He also worked in the internal affairs unit and property theft division. These roles gave him insight into the department’s strengths and challenges.

A Leader Known for Progress and Trust

City Manager Wilfredo Melendez, who appointed Reynolds, praised him as a trusted leader. “He not only brings decades of experience, but a deep, earned understanding of New Rochelle,” said Melendez.

“Residents, officers, and community leaders alike know who he is, how he leads, and what he stands for,” Melendez continued. “We are committed to building on that momentum.”

Plans to Strengthen the Department

Reynolds holds a degree from Iona College and earned his law degree from Pace University. He plans to focus on several key areas in his new role.

He wants to improve how the department connects with the community. He also aims to support officer wellness, increase training, and bring in new technology.

One of his top goals is to promote the city’s Quality of Life Initiative, which focuses on making New Rochelle a better place to live for everyone.
