Senegal Stuns England with a 3-1 Victory
Senegal made football history on Tuesday night with a thrilling 3-1 win over England. This friendly match at the City Ground marked the first time an African team has ever beaten England.
The goals came from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra, and Cheikh Sabaly, leaving the English defense scrambling. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly summed up the team’s feelings:
“Fantastic night. We knew we could do something in this game,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
First African Team to Defeat the Three Lions
Before this game, England had never lost to an African team in 21 matches—15 wins and 6 draws. That record is now broken.
England’s captain Harry Kane called the performance disappointing. “We’re not finding the right tempo,” he said. “Things aren’t clicking.”
Senegal’s Winning Streak Continues
Senegal hasn’t lost a match since January 2024. Their last defeat came at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) against Ivory Coast on penalties.
Coach Pape Thiaw took over in December and now boasts two wins and two draws. The team is showing strong form under his leadership.
Koulibaly: “We Want to Continue Writing the Story of Senegal”
Senegal’s captain Koulibaly linked the victory to the team’s big Afcon win in 2022. Back then, they beat Egypt in a nail-biting penalty shootout to win their first Afcon title.
“We made it when we won Afcon, and we made it tonight,” Koulibaly said. “We want to show we have a good nation.”
England’s First Defeat Under New Coach Thomas Tuchel
This game was England’s fourth under new manager Thomas Tuchel. It ended his short unbeaten run.
While England had moments of quality, they couldn’t match Senegal’s intensity or teamwork. Kane admitted, “We’ve lost that aggressive nature that we had.”
Senegal’s Legacy Is Growing Stronger
The Lions of Teranga continue to inspire fans at home and abroad. Their win over England is another proud moment following their 2022 Afcon championship.
That Afcon win was so meaningful that Senegal’s president declared a public holiday to celebrate it. Now, this latest victory adds more glory to their growing legacy.
