US Open to Honor 75 Years Since Althea Gibson Became the First Black Player to Break Tennis Barriers

The 2025 US Open will celebrate a historic milestone—75 years since Althea Gibson shattered tennis’ racial barriers. The tournament’s theme, “Celebrating 75 Years of Breaking Barriers,” honors her legacy and the path she paved for future generations.

A special tribute will take place in Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 24, marking the start of the singles main draws. The event will highlight Gibson’s courage and the doors she opened for players of color.

Althea Gibson’s Historic Moment in 1950

In 1950, Gibson became the first Black player to compete in the U.S. National Championships, the precursor to the US Open. Her participation at Forest Hills, New York, was a turning point in tennis history.

Despite facing discrimination, Gibson’s talent and determination forced the sport to change. She later won multiple Grand Slam titles, proving that excellence knows no color.

2025 US Open Theme Art Honors Gibson’s Legacy

This year’s tournament artwork features a striking layered silhouette of Gibson, designed by Melissa Koby. Koby is the first Black artist to create the US Open’s theme art.

The piece blends symbols of the US Open with Gibson’s powerful story. Koby aimed to make the artwork resonate with fans, athletes, and history lovers alike.

“I wanted to create a piece that represents Althea as uniquely and beautifully as she deserves,” Koby said.

USTA Pays Tribute to a Tennis Pioneer

Stacey Allaster, US Open Tournament Director, called Gibson a “universal inspiration.” The USTA plans to honor her throughout the three-week event.

Gibson’s legacy extends beyond tennis. She inspired future champions like Arthur Ashe and Serena Williams, proving that barriers are meant to be broken.

How Fans Can Celebrate Gibson’s Legacy

Posters of the theme art are available for purchase on USOpen.org. The tournament runs from August 18 to September 7.

Fans are encouraged to reflect on Gibson’s impact—not just in sports, but in the fight for equality. Her story remains as relevant today as it was 75 years ago.
