Remembering Cudjo “Jack” Banquate’s Role in the Revolutionary War and Newark’s History

Kofi Ayim will present a powerful story about Cudjo “Jack” Banquate, a man who rose from slavery to become a key figure in Newark’s history. Banquate fought bravely in the Revolutionary War, stepping in for his master, Benjamin Coe. He joined nearly every major battle during America’s fight for freedom.

After the war, Banquate was granted his freedom and an acre of land in downtown Newark. He then became the city’s first documented Black businessman. His courage and determination helped shape Newark’s community and its early economy.

The Life of Cudjo “Jack” Banquate From Ghana to Newark

Originally from Ghana, once called the Gold Coast, Cudjo “Jack” Banquate was born into royalty before being sold into slavery. His journey brought him across the ocean to Newark, New Jersey, where his life took dramatic turns.

During the Revolutionary War, Banquate’s bravery stood out. Substituting for his master was risky but showed his courage and commitment. His story is a powerful example of strength and survival during difficult times.

Kofi Ayim’s Passion for History and Culture

Kofi Ayim, a respected historian and author, is dedicated to sharing stories like Banquate’s. He has written three books focused on Black history and Ghanaian culture, including “Jack Cudjo: Newark’s Revolutionary Soldier & First Black Businessman.”

Ayim’s deep knowledge and storytelling bring these historical figures to life. His presentation promises to be both educational and inspiring for everyone interested in American and Black history.

Event Details and How to Attend

The presentation will take place on May 31, 2025, from 11:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at The Exchange Restaurant, 160 E Main Street, Rockaway, New Jersey. Tickets cost $35 and include lunch.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by May 29. This event is hosted by the Jockey Hollow Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. It offers a rare chance to learn about a forgotten hero whose story deserves to be told.
