Senator April N.M. Baskin was recently honored by the Buffalo Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) with their Achievement Award. This award recognizes women in Buffalo and Western New York whose character and accomplishments uplift the community and dignify the role of women.
Baskin’s work began even before her political career. She founded the College Stimulation Experience to help young people prepare for college success. Her efforts have made a lasting difference in education and community support.
Trailblazing Leadership in Erie County and New York Senate
In 2019, Baskin made history as the youngest legislator and the first freshman to serve as Chairwoman of the Erie County Legislature. She held this leadership role throughout her tenure, proving her strength and commitment.
Now, as a New York State Senator, she is the first Black woman to hold her Senate seat. She is actively working to create lasting opportunities and push systemic reforms that benefit the people of Buffalo, Cheektowaga, and Lackawanna.
Recognition Reflects Dedication to Equality and Community
Lilyen Mascellino, president of AAUW Buffalo, praised Baskin’s achievements. She said, “Senator Baskin exemplifies the victories women have fought for and won throughout history in the U.S.”
Mascellino highlighted the importance of the 19th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act in paving the way for Baskin’s political career. She added, “Her dedication aligns with the mission of AAUW to advance equality for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy.”
