Committed to Listening and Community Needs
As mayor, Sally wants to make sure that the voices of all residents are heard. She stated, “I’ll be carrying on what the past mayors have done for them. It’s about trying to unite the communities and the businesses together, and the town.” She acknowledges her own journey as an immigrant settling in the UK and sees it as a foundation to understand diverse perspectives.
She also pointed out, “I am an immigrant who has settled in the UK and called Dunstable my home.” Sally’s priority is clear: to serve the people by focusing on what they truly need and building stronger connections between different groups.
Background and Community Involvement
Outside politics, Sally has worked as a social worker and founded the Luton, Dunstable & Surrounding Kenya Community Forum (LDSKCF). This forum creates a space for Kenyan people living in the area to share their culture and support each other.
Her experience in social work has shaped her compassion and understanding. She explained, “I’ve experienced domestic violence and discrimination. I’ve learned to appreciate people in terms of being more considerate, because I know how people have treated me.” This empathy will guide her leadership style as mayor.
Promoting Diversity and Multiculturalism
Sally is dedicated to promoting diversity within Dunstable. She believes the town reflects a society that has evolved over time. “For me, it’s also promoting multiculturalism, as our society has really evolved,” she said.
She is proud of her hard work and contribution to the community. Sally added, “I’m that person who’s worked hard, who’s giving back to the community, who’s given back to society, and who makes a contribution back.” Her vision includes recognizing the positive roles many people play in making Dunstable a better place.
Working Together with Deputy Mayor Richard Attwell
Joining Sally Kimondo in leadership is Cllr Richard Attwell, the new deputy town mayor. Sally shared, “He’s my deputy mayor, and I am looking forward to us working together to put the needs of the community first, that’s the priority.” Their teamwork aims to ensure Dunstable remains focused on serving all residents.
The council’s spokesperson highlighted Sally’s appointment as a moment of progress. They said, “Her appointment marks a powerful moment of progress and representation for Dunstable.” Sally’s leadership brings experience, compassion, and a future-focused vision to the town.
