Erek Barron Broke Barriers as Maryland’s First Black U.S. Attorney Before Taking on Major Law Firm Role

Erek Barron Joins Leading D.C. Law Firm

Erek L. Barron, a respected legal figure and public servant, has joined the law firm Mintz in Washington, D.C. He will lead the firm’s crisis management and strategic response team. This includes handling major legal matters—civil, criminal, and regulatory.

Barron brings deep experience from his time in government and private practice. “His background in high-stakes litigation and public service will bring great value to our clients,” said Bob Bodian, managing member of Mintz.

Making History as Maryland’s First Black U.S. Attorney

Before joining Mintz, Barron served as the U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland. Appointed by President Joe Biden, he made history in 2021 as the first Black person to hold that role in the state.

During his time in office, Barron tackled major legal cases. His office led a $2 billion cryptocurrency fraud investigation and secured convictions in a COVID-19 drug scam involving a publicly traded biotech firm. “We dealt with big, complex problems across nearly every area of law,” Barron said.

High-Profile Cases and Public Service Impact

One major case under Barron’s leadership involved HyperFund, a company accused of defrauding investors. Three individuals were charged, including one who admitted receiving $3 million in fraudulent proceeds.

Another major case focused on executives from CytoDyn Inc. They were convicted of lying to investors about new treatments. The charges revealed millions in personal profits and company funds misused.

Strong Political and Legislative Background

Before becoming U.S. attorney, Barron served in several influential roles. He worked closely with then-Senator Joe Biden on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He also served as a Maryland state delegate for Prince George’s County from 2015 to 2021.

During his time in the state legislature, Barron co-chaired a workgroup focused on improving safety and budgeting for the Washington Metro system. He also helped push forward the Justice Reinvestment Act to reform sentencing and corrections policies.

A New Chapter at Mintz with a Commitment to Values

Now at Mintz, Barron continues to focus on fairness and integrity. He praised the firm’s values, especially its dedication to diversity and inclusion. “It’s important to me to be at a place that sticks by its principles,” he said.

Michelle Lipkowitz, managing member of the D.C. office, added, “Erek’s leadership and proven track record will be a major asset to our firm.”
