Boyd Cru Wines Opens Maryland’s First Black-Owned Family Winery Tasting Room, Showcasing Generational Craft and Community Pride

A new chapter in Maryland’s wine scene just opened its doors. Boyd Cru Wines, the state’s first Black-owned family winery, recently launched its tasting room in Savage, Maryland. More than just a place to sip wine, the space stands as a symbol of family legacy, local pride, and community empowerment.

The new tasting room officially welcomed guests during National Small Business Week. Owners Janella and Matthew Boyd shared their excitement about creating a space that celebrates both wine and the people behind it.

A Family Legacy Built on Local Grapes and Community Focus

What makes Boyd Cru Wines special isn’t just the wine itself. The winery uses 100% Maryland-grown grapes, keeping its craft rooted in local soil. This dedication helps support nearby farmers and highlights the rich agricultural history of the region.

The Boyds noticed a gap in the wine industry — a lack of diversity, especially in family-run wineries. Their goal was to change that narrative while preserving their own family traditions. “We enjoy trying wines from everywhere,” Janella Boyd explained, “but what we didn’t see was people who look like us.”

This new tasting room is not only about Boyd Cru’s wines. It’s about making space for others who might not have their own storefront yet.

More Than Wine: A Launchpad for Other Small Businesses

Another unique part of Boyd Cru’s new venture is its mission to uplift other local businesses. The owners intentionally left room in their tasting space for small business founders to sell their products in person.

One of those businesses is Indie Byee, a brand offering handmade spices. Until now, Indie Byee had only sold online. “It’s a big, huge step,” said owner Shalita Fleming Wells. “It’s different when people can actually pick up an item, smell it, and know what they’re getting.”

The Boyds hope the tasting room becomes a true community hub where guests discover local products and stories right alongside their glass of wine.

Visiting the Boyd Cru Wines Tasting Room

For anyone interested in stopping by, Boyd Cru Wines tasting room is located in Savage Mill, Maryland. The space is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Along with wine tastings, visitors will find locally made items and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Whether you’re there for a sip, a spice, or to meet the makers, it’s an experience designed to bring people together.

The Boyds’ vision is simple but powerful: build something rooted in family and use it to lift others up.
