A Groundbreaking Achievement in Pure Mathematics
Thobile Ngcamphalala has achieved what no other Black South African woman has at Rhodes University. She earned a Master’s degree in Topology with Distinction. Her achievement stands out as a major milestone in the field of Pure Mathematics.
This moment is not just about academic excellence. It represents years of effort, determination, and breaking through barriers in a field where Black women remain underrepresented. Rhodes University celebrated her achievement during its 2025 graduation ceremony.
From Extended Curriculum to Academic Excellence
Thobile’s academic journey began with the extended curriculum programme. This programme is designed to support students who need more time to adjust. Many who take this route face additional challenges.
But Thobile used it as a stepping stone. She went on to earn her BSc Honours degree in Pure Mathematics with Distinction. Her drive and commitment helped her complete her Master’s degree in just one year.
Publishing Research and Making Her Mark
Beyond her degree, Thobile made a mark in the academic world through research. Her paper was published in the Applied General Topology journal, which is accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
She was listed as the first author, a big deal for someone still completing postgraduate studies. This publication reflects her growing expertise and strengthens her voice in a field where few women like her are seen.
A Mentor’s Reflections on Her Journey
Her supervisor, Dr. Mbekezeli Nxumalo, shared how proud he is of her journey. “Thobile’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and brilliance,” he said.
“She set her own pace and broke new ground. It was a privilege to walk beside her through this journey.”
Looking Ahead: A Future in Pure Mathematics
Thobile is not stopping anytime soon. She plans to register for her PhD in Pure Mathematics later this year. Her journey is far from over.
Her success is a powerful reminder that support, grit, and guidance can help students rise to new heights. From underrepresented to unforgettable, Thobile is now a name future mathematicians will remember.
