Walter Daniels III Becomes Amite’s First Black Mayor
In 2020, Walter Daniels III made history when he was appointed as Amite, Louisiana’s first Black mayor. The moment came during a special meeting held by the Amite Town Council, where the community gathered to witness the change in leadership following the death of Mayor Buddy Bel.
Daniels was named interim mayor to finish the last year of Bel’s second term. His appointment marked a significant milestone in the town’s history, as he became the first African American to hold the office.
A Pivotal Moment in Amite’s Leadership
The town council voted to select the interim mayor, and Daniels secured the majority of the votes. He received three votes from council members Jonathon Foster, Kris Hart, and Emanuel Zanders III. Two votes went to other candidates, including Claire Bel, the late mayor’s wife, and Councilwoman Rose Sumrall.
The vote brought an air of excitement and change to the town, with over 200 people attending the meeting. Many residents were eager to see a new chapter in Amite’s leadership.
A Legacy of Service and Experience
Before stepping into the mayor’s office, Daniels had a long history of public service. He had served on the Amite Town Council for 23 years and was a member of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board from 2014 to 2018. His experience in these roles helped to solidify his reputation as a dedicated public servant.
“I think I have the experience,” Daniels said after the vote. “I served on the council for 23 years, and I was on the school board.” His extensive background made him a trusted candidate for the role, earning him the support of many in the community.
A Vision for the Future of Amite
Daniels was clear about his intentions once appointed, stating that he planned to serve all of Amite’s residents equally. “I’m going to be the mayor for all the people,” he emphasized.
Though he was stepping in as interim mayor, Daniels had bigger plans. He announced that he would be running for mayor in the upcoming election that would take place later that year. With his sights set on a full term, he was ready to take on the challenges of leadership.
Looking Ahead: The 2020 Election
Though Daniels was appointed to serve out the remainder of Mayor Bel’s term, the town’s next mayoral election was fast approaching. While Claire Bel, the late mayor’s wife, had expressed interest in completing the term, she decided not to run for the office that fall. On the other hand, Police Chief Jerry Trabona announced his intentions to join the race for mayor as well.
The 2020 election would give Daniels the opportunity to build on his leadership in the interim role and seek a full term as mayor.
