Darnell K. Williams Sr. has been named the next president of North Central University (NCU), making history as the first Black president in the institution’s 90+ years. Williams, a seasoned leader with over three decades of experience in ministry, education, and organizational governance, will officially take the reins in the spring. He will succeed Interim President Doug Graham, who has led the university through a period of transition.
Leadership Experience and Vision for NCU
Williams’ appointment as NCU’s eighth president comes after a thorough nationwide search. The search committee, led by board member Kathryn Madson, praised Williams for his leadership qualities and spiritual depth. “We are excited about the role he will have in continuing the rich legacy of NCU,” Madson said after the committee completed a rigorous evaluation process.
Before his appointment, Williams served as an associate professor at NCU and directed the Preaching Institute for City Transformation. His passion for mentoring and developing future leaders is clear in his approach. As president, Williams aims to further NCU’s mission of empowering students with both academic excellence and spiritual formation.
A Commitment to Spiritual Education and Community Impact
Williams’ leadership background is rooted in his long career within the Assemblies of God (AG), where he currently serves as president of the National Black Fellowship. His decades of service, including roles as an Executive Presbyter and church leader in Ohio, have positioned him to lead NCU with a blend of faith-driven passion and administrative expertise.
Williams emphasized his belief in a divine calling to NCU: “This was more than just a new opportunity — it felt like a divine appointment,” he shared. With his leadership, Williams sees tremendous potential for the university, especially in its urban setting in Minneapolis, a city known for its diversity and Christian community.
A Legacy of Empowerment and Educational Excellence
NCU’s Board Chair, Shawn Dockter, expressed his excitement about Williams’ selection, noting, “I knew from the moment I met him that he was special in every way.” Williams’ vision for NCU aligns with the university’s rich legacy, which dates back to 1930. NCU has long been a hub for Christian education, shaping students for impactful careers in ministry, business, education, and the arts.
Under Williams’ leadership, NCU aims to continue producing graduates who not only excel academically but are also spiritually grounded and prepared to make a difference in the world.
Looking Ahead to the Future of Christian Higher Education
With his extensive experience and passion for mentoring, Williams plans to bring a fresh perspective to the future of Christian higher education. “We’re not just handing out degrees — we’re shaping destiny,” Williams stated. He envisions a university where faith, learning, and mission come together to transform lives and communities.
As the first Black president of an Assemblies of God college, Williams is breaking new ground in Christian higher education. His appointment represents a step forward in fostering diversity and inclusion while staying committed to NCU’s mission of nurturing leaders who will shape the future with integrity and faith.
A Family-Oriented Approach to Leadership
Darnell Williams is deeply committed to family. He and his wife, Charlene, have been married for over 30 years. Together, they have raised their son, Adrian, who is pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. in New York. Charlene, an adjunct faculty member at NCU, continues to work alongside Darnell at the Preaching Institute.
As Williams prepares to take office, he looks forward to the upcoming inauguration ceremony. Plans are currently underway, with details expected to be released in the near future. Williams’ leadership is poised to lead NCU into a new era, one that builds on its strong foundation while embracing fresh opportunities for growth and transformation.
