A Historic Win for La Crosse
Shaundel Washington-Spivey has been elected the new mayor of La Crosse, Wisconsin, after a close race. He defeated City Council President Chris Kahlow by only 451 votes. This narrow victory marks a powerful moment for the city.
Washington-Spivey is now the first Black and openly LGBTQ+ person to hold this office in La Crosse’s history. He will officially take office on April 15, following Mayor Mitch Reynolds, who chose not to seek re-election.
Community Impact and Reaction
Washington-Spivey called the moment meaningful, especially considering the long journey of Black residents in La Crosse. He credited local history efforts like the Enduring Families Project for keeping that history alive.
“It means the world,” he told reporters. “I think about what it took to get here, and I feel honored.” His message was clear—this win is not just his, but for every person who never felt seen in leadership.
Champion for Equity and Inclusion
Before becoming mayor, Washington-Spivey served on the La Crosse School Board. He also helped create B.L.A.C.K., Inc., a nonprofit that uplifts youth through education and leadership programs.
He also worked on Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers’ Advisory Council on Equity and Inclusion. His efforts focused on creating fair opportunities and safe spaces for all people—especially marginalized groups.
A Mayor for Everyone
Washington-Spivey says he’s ready to serve all residents, no matter their background. “Our identities matter,” he said. “Race, gender, sexual orientation—they shape how we live. And I want every person to feel respected.”
His goal is to unite La Crosse across race, class, gender, and beliefs. “We need to come together across differences and build a community that’s for everybody,” he added.
Support Across Wisconsin
Supporters across the state praised Washington-Spivey’s win as a sign of progress. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes said, “His election shows exactly why we can’t give up on what matters.”
Chris Walton, former Milwaukee Democratic Party chair, called Washington-Spivey a role model. “He moved to La Crosse for college, stayed, served, and is now mayor-elect. That’s dedication,” Walton shared.
What Comes Next
As he prepares for office, Washington-Spivey is already focused on what’s next. He said the first 100 days will involve working closely with city staff and understanding how best to meet La Crosse’s needs.
He’s committed to good governance, strong communication, and uplifting every voice. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “We’re building something bigger than politics.”
