Shaundel Washington-Spivey Takes Office as La Crosse’s First Black and Openly LGBTQ Mayor, Pledging Unity and Inclusion

A Historic Victory for La Crosse

Shaundel Washington-Spivey made history this week. On Tuesday, he became La Crosse, Wisconsin’s first Black and openly LGBTQ mayor. He won by just 451 votes, defeating opponent Chris Kahlow.

“It means a lot,” Washington-Spivey said after his victory. “Being the first Black mayor in a city with deep roots means the world to me.” His win marks a major step forward for representation in local government.

A Leader Committed to Unity

Washington-Spivey isn’t new to leadership. He previously served on the school board and co-founded B.L.A.C.K., Inc., a nonprofit supporting La Crosse youth. He also worked on Wisconsin’s Advisory Council on Equity and Inclusion.

“Our identities matter,” he said. “I want to bring people together—across race, gender, and background—to build a community for everybody.” His focus is on inclusion, fairness, and collaboration.

Celebrated Across Wisconsin

His victory has inspired many. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes called it proof that “we can’t give up on what matters.” Others, like former Milwaukee Democratic Party chair Chris Walton, praised his dedication.

“He moved here for college and made La Crosse his home,” Walton said. “Now, he’s mayor-elect. He’s exactly the kind of leader we need.” Supporters see him as a symbol of progress.

The Road Ahead

In his first 100 days, Washington-Spivey plans to meet city staff and reassess priorities. His goal is efficient, transparent governance that serves all residents.

His journey—from school board member to mayor—shows what’s possible. La Crosse now has a leader who reflects its diversity. And for Washington-Spivey, this is just the beginning.
