Starocci Makes History as First Five-Time NCAA Champion
Penn State’s Carter Starocci has done what no wrestler ever has—he won his fifth NCAA national title. On March 22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Starocci cemented his legacy as the greatest collegiate wrestler of all time.
Not only did he break the record, but he was also named the 2025 NCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler. His dominance was so effortless that he made history look easy. “For me, I’ve been in this moment so many times year after year,” Starocci said. “It’s really just another match.”
A Career Defined by Dominance and Resilience
Starocci’s journey to five titles wasn’t without challenges. He lost his first collegiate match in 2021 but bounced back to win his first national title that same year. From 2022 to 2023, he went undefeated, crushing top opponents like Virginia Tech’s Mekhi Lewis and Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola.
Even a serious knee injury in 2024 couldn’t stop him. After taking two injury defaults at the Big Ten tournament, he still fought his way to a fourth title. This year, he proved once again why he’s unstoppable, defeating former champions like Lewis and Michigan’s Shane Griffith.
Penn State’s Wrestling Dynasty Continues
Starocci isn’t the only Nittany Lion making waves. Teammate Mitchell Mesenbrink also claimed a title, while freshman Josh Barr finished as an NCAA runner-up. Under head coach Cael Sanderson, Penn State has now produced 61 NCAA champions, with 40 coming during Sanderson’s legendary tenure.
The team’s success highlights why Penn State remains the gold standard in college wrestling. With Starocci leading the charge, the Nittany Lions show no signs of slowing down.
What’s Next for the Wrestling Legend?
At just 23, Starocci has already achieved more than most wrestlers dream of. With only two losses in his entire college career, his next move could include Olympic or World Championship aspirations.
For now, he’s savoring his historic win. “I know it’s ‘five-time champ,’ but it’s just another day,” he said. Yet for wrestling fans, it’s a moment that will be remembered forever.
