Jameis Winston Signs $8 Million Deal with Giants
The New York Giants have officially signed veteran quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million contract. This move positions Winston to make history as the first Black quarterback to start a season opener for the Giants in their 100-year history.
With this signing, Winston joins Tommy DeVito as the only quarterbacks currently on the Giants’ roster. The team had been searching for an experienced quarterback, with names like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson also in the mix. Ultimately, they chose Winston, a former No. 1 overall pick known for his strong arm and playmaking ability.
Giants’ Quarterback Search Ends with Winston
The Giants’ offseason has been filled with speculation about their quarterback situation. While they briefly pursued Rodgers and considered other options, they ultimately settled on Winston.
Winston confirmed the signing with a playful message on X, referencing his well-known “Eat a W” speech from his time in Tampa Bay. His post, featuring an apple emoji, signaled his excitement about joining the Big Apple’s team.
A Fresh Start After a Decade in the NFL
Winston, now 31, brings a wealth of experience to the Giants. Last season, he played in 12 games for the Cleveland Browns, starting in seven. He threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Despite some ups and downs, he set a Browns record with 497 passing yards in a single game.
Before Cleveland, Winston spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, mostly as a backup. He had brief starting opportunities but was sidelined by injuries, including a torn ACL in 2021. Now, he gets a chance to lead again in New York.
The Giants’ Draft Plans Remain Open
While Winston’s signing strengthens the Giants’ quarterback depth, it does not mean they are done making moves. The team holds the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, which could be used to select a future franchise quarterback.
Names like Cam Ward from Miami and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado remain in consideration. Even if they draft a young quarterback, Winston’s presence ensures the Giants have a proven starter for Week 1.
Winston’s Journey to the Giants
Winston entered the NFL as the first overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made an immediate impact, finishing second in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. He threw for over 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons and led the NFL in passing yards in 2019 with 5,109.
However, his aggressive playing style also led to turnovers. In 2019, he threw 33 touchdowns but also led the league with 30 interceptions. After that season, Tampa Bay moved on, signing Tom Brady.
Can Winston Deliver for the Giants?
Winston has proven he can produce big numbers, but consistency will be key. The Giants are in a rebuilding phase, and his leadership will be crucial.
If he performs well, he could solidify his role as a long-term starter. But with a high draft pick in play, he may also serve as a bridge quarterback for the next era of Giants football.
