A Historic Milestone for London West
Arielle Kayabaga made history in 2021 as the first Black woman elected to represent London West in Canada’s House of Commons. Her journey from refugee to parliamentarian is a testament to her resilience and dedication to public service.
Kayabaga’s election broke barriers and inspired many. She has since become a strong voice for democracy, inclusivity, and community development in her role as a Member of Parliament (MP).
“Representation matters,” Kayabaga has often said. “I am here to ensure every voice in London West is heard.”
A Champion for Immigrants and Affordable Housing
Born in Bujumbura, Burundi, Kayabaga immigrated to Canada as a refugee at age 11. Her personal experiences have shaped her commitment to supporting immigrants and refugees.
Before entering federal politics, Kayabaga served on London City Council, becoming the first Black woman to do so. She also worked as a settlement worker, helping newcomers integrate into Canadian society.
“Affordable housing and support for immigrants are not just policies—they are personal to me,” Kayabaga emphasized.
Building a Stronger Democracy
As the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Democratic Institutions, Kayabaga plays a key role in strengthening Canada’s democratic processes. She has served on several parliamentary committees, including Citizenship and Immigration, Health, and Science and Research.
Her work focuses on making government more accessible and inclusive. Kayabaga believes that engaging citizens in decision-making is essential for a thriving democracy.
“Democracy is stronger when everyone has a seat at the table,” she said.
Recognized for Leadership and Impact
Kayabaga’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and honoured as Politician of the Year by One Young World.
Her achievements highlight her dedication to addressing global challenges, from women’s health to civic engagement. Kayabaga’s leadership continues to inspire young people, especially women of colour, to pursue careers in public service.
“I hope my journey shows that no dream is too big,” she shared.
