Rapper Flo Rida, born Tramar Lacel Dillard, has made history by purchasing Miami Gardens’ Cloverleaf Plaza for $10 million. This marks the first time the shopping center is under Black ownership. Alongside his business manager, Lee “Freezy” Prince, Flo Rida aims to empower the community and support local businesses.
A Milestone for Miami Gardens
Cloverleaf Plaza, now a thriving hub for Black-owned businesses, is home to shops like Cloverleaf Beauty Supply, Creole Kitchen, and Flowers by Grace. Grace Vernon, the 74-year-old owner of Flowers by Grace, has operated her floral shop in the plaza for over 30 years.
“It gives you a sense of pride…to see someone who looks like you doing great things,” Vernon told the Miami Herald. The plaza’s new ownership has brought a renewed sense of community pride and economic opportunity.
Transforming the Plaza
Since the purchase, tenants have noticed significant improvements. Nicole Ward, owner of Prestige Beauty Salon, praised the enhanced safety and accessibility.
“It’s 100 percent better than before. It’s well kept. We have security guards,” Ward said. “Mr. Freezy is constantly in the plaza. You feel safe, and you can get to him easily with any problem.”
Flo Rida and Prince plan to further upgrade the plaza with a new paint job and asphalt resurfacing, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for businesses and customers.
A Vision for Community Empowerment
Flo Rida’s investment follows his $82.6 million legal victory against energy drink company Celsius for breach of contract. This financial win allowed him to expand his investments in Miami Gardens, including the plaza and nearby nightclub Studio 183.
“We just thought that this would be a great staple,” Flo Rida said. “After purchasing the club, we looked at making an investment and buying the entire plaza.”
According to a Brookings study, Black people own just two percent of nonresidential commercial real estate. Flo Rida’s purchase is a significant step toward changing this statistic.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Flo Rida’s commitment to his hometown goes beyond business. By creating a space for Black entrepreneurs to thrive, he is fostering economic growth and community pride.
“Growing up, you might own a house, but owning a plaza is phenomenal,” Flo Rida shared. His vision is to inspire others to dream big and invest in their communities.
Cloverleaf Plaza stands as a testament to what can be achieved when successful individuals give back. It’s not just a shopping center—it’s a symbol of hope and progress for Miami Gardens.
