Tiger Woods Biopic in Development with Amazon MGM Studios
Tiger Woods, one of the most iconic figures in golf history, is getting his life story turned into a major motion picture. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to Kevin Cook’s book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played. The film will explore Woods’ journey from a child prodigy to a global sports legend.
Reinaldo Marcus Green, the director behind the Oscar-nominated King Richard, will helm the project. Green’s previous work, which chronicled the rise of Venus and Serena Williams, earned Will Smith an Academy Award for Best Actor. This new film aims to capture the essence of Woods’ unparalleled career and his impact on the sport of golf.
Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground to Produce
Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is in talks to produce the Tiger Woods biopic. Known for their work on critically acclaimed projects like Rustin and Crip Camp, the Obamas have been expanding their sports media portfolio. Recently, they produced Court of Gold, a documentary about the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Starting 5, a series on the 2023-2024 NBA season.
Irwin Winkler, a veteran producer behind classics like Rocky and Goodfellas, is also set to join the team. With such a powerhouse team behind it, the film promises to be a compelling and inspiring portrayal of Woods’ life and legacy.
The Tiger Slam: A Historic Golf Achievement
The film will focus heavily on Woods’ historic “Tiger Slam,” where he won four consecutive major championships between 2000 and 2001. This feat remains one of the greatest achievements in golf history. Kevin Cook’s book, which serves as the basis for the movie, delves into Woods’ relentless drive for perfection and the challenges he faced on and off the course.
Cook interviewed Woods’ caddie, coaches, mentors, and even his rivals to paint a comprehensive picture of the golfer’s rise to fame. The book also highlights Woods’ groundbreaking victory at the 1997 Masters, where he became the first Black golfer to win a major title. This win not only cemented his place in sports history but also brought golf to a broader audience.
Tiger Woods’ Enduring Legacy
Despite recent injuries, including emergency Achilles tendon surgery, Woods continues to be a prominent figure in golf. Last year, he teamed up with his son Charlie at the PNC Championship, showcasing the next generation of Woods’ golf talent. He also co-founded a tech-infused golf league with Rory McIlroy, further modernizing the sport.
Woods’ influence extends beyond the golf course. In February, he met with former President Donald Trump to discuss the future of golf during Black History Month. His legacy as a trailblazer and his contributions to the sport remain unmatched.
A New Chapter for Sports Biopics
The Tiger Woods biopic joins a growing list of acclaimed sports films, such as King Richard and Raging Bull. With the Obamas’ involvement and Green’s directorial expertise, the movie is poised to be both a critical and commercial success. It will not only celebrate Woods’ achievements but also inspire a new generation of athletes and fans.
