Richmond’s Historic Triple-Double Seals St. John’s Overtime Victory
Kadary Richmond made history on Saturday, delivering St. John’s first triple-double in 26 years. The senior guard led his team to an 86-84 overtime win against No. 20 Marquette at Fiserv Forum.
Richmond finished the game with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and four steals in 42 minutes. His all-around performance helped sixth-ranked St. John’s secure the hard-fought victory.
“It means a lot to me and my teammates,” Richmond said. “We’ve been doing historic things all season, so this time it’s an individual one. But I’ll give it all to them. They made shots, they made the big plays.”
Game-Changing Moments in a Tight Contest
Despite struggling with his shooting (5-for-13), Richmond made key plays in overtime. He tipped the ball away from Chase Ross after an RJ Luis Jr. miss, allowing Simeon Wilcher to recover it. Wilcher then set up Zuby Ejiofor for the buzzer-beating game-winner.
Richmond’s defensive instincts and court vision kept St. John’s in the game when it mattered most. His ability to stay composed under pressure proved critical for his team.
St. John’s Coach Praises Richmond’s Leadership
Head coach Rick Pitino had high praise for Richmond after the game.
“I think he was fatigued and he fought through the fatigue,” Pitino said. “Made big plays down the stretch.”
The Hall of Fame coach also called Richmond “the easiest great player I’ve coached by far.” He highlighted the senior’s humility, work ethic, and commitment to his teammates.
First Triple-Double Since Ron Artest in 1999
Richmond’s triple-double is the first for St. John’s since Ron Artest (now Metta Sandiford-Artest) accomplished the feat on January 9, 1999. His name now joins an elite group of players in the program’s history.
This achievement cements Richmond as one of the most impactful players of the season. His ability to contribute in multiple areas makes him a key asset for St. John’s as they push forward in the season.
St. John’s Supporting Cast Steps Up
Simeon Wilcher played a crucial role in the victory, scoring 13 points, dishing out three assists, and blocking a shot in 41 minutes.
Freshman Lefteris Liotopoulos also made an impact off the bench. In his season-high 16 minutes, he scored six points and grabbed two rebounds, helping St. John’s maintain momentum.
Looking Ahead for St. John’s
With this victory, St. John’s continues to prove they are a force to be reckoned with. Richmond’s leadership and all-around play will be vital as the team moves forward in a highly competitive season.
As they prepare for upcoming matchups, the Red Storm will look to build on this thrilling win and push for a strong finish.
