Garlin Gilchrist Launches Campaign to Become Michigan’s First Black Governor, Pledging Innovation and Economic Growth

Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II has officially announced his campaign to become the state’s next governor. If elected, he would make history as Michigan’s first Black governor. Gilchrist, a Democrat, is running on a platform of innovation, economic growth, and improved public services.

A Historic Bid for Michigan’s Highest Office

Garlin Gilchrist, who has served as lieutenant governor since 2019, unveiled his campaign on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. In his announcement video, he emphasized his commitment to using technology and innovation to improve the lives of Michiganders.

“That’s why I became an engineer. It’s why I went into public service, and that’s why I’m running for governor of the state of Michigan,” Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist, a former software engineer at Microsoft, has long focused on leveraging technology to make government more efficient. During his time in office, he has championed initiatives like the Clean Slate program, which helps reform the criminal justice system, and the Michigan Innovation Fund, which supports tech startups.

A Focus on Economic Growth and Public Services

Gilchrist’s campaign centers on expanding affordable housing, improving health care, and strengthening mental health services across the state. He has also pledged to stand up for workers, families, and businesses in the face of federal challenges.

“Donald Trump and Elon Musk are breaking commitments to our state and attacking Michiganders every day,” Gilchrist stated. “As governor, I’ll protect our rights and stand up for the families, workers, and businesses that keep our economy strong.”

He criticized the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency for their rapid overhaul of federal policies, which he believes have harmed Michigan. Gilchrist aims to bring a problem-solving approach to the governor’s office, drawing on his engineering background.

“When you have a problem, an engineer can fix that problem,” he told The Associated Press. “That’s a story that I’m going to tell.”

A Competitive Democratic Primary

Gilchrist is the third Democrat to enter the race to replace term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Other candidates include Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

Gilchrist has highlighted his close partnership with Whitmer, crediting her with laying a strong foundation for the state. He is widely seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, with a focus on practical solutions and inclusive policies.

“Real leaders find solutions that improve the lives of the people they serve instead of just looking out for themselves,” Gilchrist said. “So, let’s make the dream of health and wealth a reality for every Michigander.”

The Road Ahead

Winning the Democratic primary will be no easy task, as Michigan remains a politically competitive state. Former President Donald Trump narrowly flipped Michigan in the last general election, underscoring the challenges Democrats face in securing statewide victories.

Gilchrist, however, is confident in his ability to connect with voters across all 83 counties. He has already built relationships with local leaders and plans to run a campaign focused on unity and progress.

“I’m running to ensure that every Michigander has the opportunity to thrive,” Gilchrist said. “Together, we can build a brighter future for our state.”
