Academy Award Winner Returns to Alma Mater
Paul Tazewell, the first Black man to win an Oscar for costume design, will deliver the 2025 commencement speech at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). Tazewell, a UNCSA alumnus, made history with his win for the film Wicked, calling it “the pinnacle of my career.”
The ceremony will take place on May 17 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. Tazewell will address both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as high school graduates, sharing insights from his groundbreaking career.
Chancellor Brian Cole expressed excitement about Tazewell’s return. “Paul is the finest role model our students could have,” Cole said. “He’s forged his own path as a Black man in the industry, and his story will inspire them to do the same.”
A Trailblazer in Costume Design
Tazewell’s career spans over 30 years, with achievements in theater, film, and television. His work on Hamilton earned him a Tony Award, while The Wiz Live! brought him an Emmy. Recently, his designs for Wicked won him an Oscar, a BAFTA, and a Critics Choice Award.
“I’m deeply honored to deliver the commencement speech,” Tazewell said. “Thirty-nine years ago, I walked across that stage as a graduate. That moment opened countless doors for me, and I’m thrilled to celebrate this new beginning for the next generation of artists.”
Tazewell’s journey began at UNCSA, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986. He later established a scholarship for students of color in the School of Design and Production, ensuring future generations have access to opportunities.
A Legacy of Inspiration and Innovation
Tazewell’s influence extends beyond awards. His designs for West Side Story earned him an Oscar nomination, while his work on Harriet and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert showcased his versatility. On Broadway, his costumes for Death Becomes Her and Suffs continue to set new standards.
“Paul’s work is transformative,” said Chancellor Cole. “He brings characters to life through his artful designs, and his dedication to mentoring young artists is unparalleled.”
Tazewell’s speech will highlight his journey, from facing challenges as a Black artist to achieving global recognition. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and creativity.
