A Historic First for Kilgore College Football
Willie Gooden stepped onto Kilgore College’s campus in 2000 as a walk-on football player. Nearly two decades later, he made history as the school’s first Black head football coach. Since taking the helm in 2019, he has led the team to three conference championships, cementing his legacy in Kilgore football history.
Gooden’s leadership has transformed the program, inspiring both his players and the community. His journey from a hopeful student-athlete to a championship-winning coach reflects his resilience, determination, and deep love for the game.
From Walk-On to Championship Coach
Gooden’s football career at Kilgore College started with no guarantees. As a walk-on player, he had to prove himself every day. Through hard work and dedication, he earned his place on the team and became a key player.
After his playing days, Gooden stayed connected to the game, gradually moving into coaching. His deep understanding of Kilgore’s football culture made him the perfect candidate for head coach when the position opened in 2019. His leadership quickly paid off, as he guided the team to three conference championships in just a few years.
Impact Beyond the Field
Gooden’s influence extends beyond wins and losses. He believes in shaping young men into strong, disciplined individuals. With an open-door policy, he mentors players, teaching them valuable life skills that go beyond football.
“Examples are important. Visual aids are important,” Gooden said. “To see someone that looks like them leading a program shows these young men that they can achieve greatness too.”
A Role Model for Future Generations
Gooden’s success as Kilgore’s first Black head coach holds deep significance. Representation in leadership positions matters, and his journey shows aspiring athletes and coaches that hard work and perseverance can open doors.
