The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) has named Anne Collins Smith as its new chief curator, marking a historic moment for the institution. Smith, a seasoned curator with deep expertise in African American art, began her role in September 2024, with the official announcement made on February 13.
A Lifetime Opportunity for a Trailblazing Curator
For Anne Collins Smith, this appointment is a dream come true. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime and a testimony to perseverance and my dedication to curatorial practice,” she said. Smith will oversee NOMA’s collection and exhibition efforts, managing a team of curators, conservators, and collections staff.
Her role includes leading modern and contemporary art presentations, with a focus on African American art. Smith’s vision is to create meaningful connections between art, artists, and the community. “The art historian Mary Ann Calo speaks of how curators serve as interlocutors between art, artists, and the community. This principle continues to guide me through my career,” she explained.
A Vision for NOMA’s Future
Smith’s leadership comes at a pivotal time for NOMA. She will lead innovative strategies to align the museum’s collections and exhibitions with industry best practices. Upcoming projects include reinstallations of parts of the permanent collection and retrospectives of artists Hayward Oubre and Willie Birch.
Susan M. Taylor, NOMA’s director, praised Smith’s appointment. “Anne Collins Smith is an accomplished curator, art historian, and museum leader. Her experience and perspective as a native New Orleanian make her an important addition to our staff,” Taylor said.
Smith’s deep connection to New Orleans and her extensive experience in the art world position her to elevate NOMA’s mission. “The museum’s permanent collection of art spanning 5,000 years is at the center of everything we do,” Taylor added.
A Career Built on Excellence
Smith’s career is a testament to her dedication to the arts. She has held key roles at prestigious institutions, including director of the Xavier University of Louisiana Art Gallery and curator of collections at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in Atlanta.
Her accolades include a prestigious Center for Curatorial Leadership fellowship in 2021. Smith earned her MA in visual arts administration from New York University and her BA from Spelman College. Her journey reflects her commitment to advancing African American art and fostering inclusivity in the art world.
Inspiring the Next Generation
As a native New Orleanian, Smith’s appointment is particularly meaningful. She brings a unique perspective to NOMA, combining her local roots with a national reputation for excellence. Her work is expected to inspire both the local community and the broader art world.
Smith’s leadership at NOMA is not just about preserving art but also about creating opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Her focus on African American art will ensure that underrepresented voices are heard and celebrated.
