LaJuana Jones has made history as Waco’s first Black Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Her journey from registered nurse to CNO is inspiring a new generation of health care professionals. Jones is also championing diversity and representation in the medical field.

Breaking Barriers in Health Care Leadership

LaJuana Jones’ appointment as CNO at Baylor Scott & White in Waco is a historic milestone. She is the first Black woman to hold this position in the city.

“I never really thought that I would be a Chief Nursing Officer, let alone the first Black chief nursing officer,” Jones said. “I just always want to make sure I’m giving to my community and elevating people of color.”

Her leadership has already brought significant achievements. Under her guidance, Baylor Scott & White earned its second Magnet designation, a prestigious honor in nursing.

A Journey of Hard Work and Dedication

Jones’ career began as a registered nurse (RN) with an associate degree from McLennan Community College. She worked her way up through education and leadership roles.

She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UTEP. Later, she became the Magnet Program Director at Hillcrest. In 2020, Jones completed her doctorate, and in 2021, she became Waco’s first Black CNO.

“It was a long journey. I probably did it one of the harder ways, but it was so worth it,” Jones shared. Her story is a testament to perseverance and dedication.

Championing Diversity in Health Care

Jones is passionate about increasing diversity in health care. She believes representation is crucial for building trust and improving care in communities.

“Our health care providers need to match the communities we serve,” Jones said. “As you get Black leaders into health care, it helps broaden our scope of having that health care professional within the community.”

She hopes her role will inspire more minorities to pursue careers in the medical field. “They need to see us so that we can bring more people into health care and a more diverse population into health care,” she added.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Jones’ accomplishments are not just personal milestones. They are also a source of inspiration for young people, especially those of color.

“If I could say one thing, never stop learning and don’t be so hard on yourself. Your journey is special because it’s your journey,” Jones said. Her words encourage others to pursue their dreams despite challenges.

Her leadership has already made a significant impact. Baylor Scott & White’s second Magnet designation under her guidance highlights her commitment to excellence.
