Fort Myers Police Department’s First Black Female Sergeant, Yvetta Dominique, Reflects on Hard Work and Dedication Behind Her Historic Promotion

The Fort Myers Police Department (FMPD) has made history with the promotion of Yvetta Dominique as its first Black female sergeant. Dominique’s journey to this milestone is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and commitment to her community.

Breaking Barriers with Hard Work and Humility

Yvetta Dominique’s promotion to sergeant is a historic moment for the Fort Myers Police Department. She is the first Black woman to hold this position, marking a significant step forward for diversity in law enforcement.

“It is an accomplishment, and I am honored to have been that person. But for me, it is about the hard work. Putting in that hard work,” Dominique told Gulf Coast News. Her humility and focus on perseverance have defined her career.

Dominique joined the FMPD in 2008 and has since become a beloved figure in the community. Known for her warm smile and approachable demeanor, she has shattered stereotypes about what it means to be a police officer.

A Lifelong Dream Realized

Before becoming a police officer, Dominique worked various jobs, including singing in a reggae band. However, her lifelong dream was always to serve in law enforcement.

“In 2008 is when I got sworn in. I’ve been here ever since,” she said. Her passion for helping others and building relationships made her a natural fit for the FMPD’s Community Engagement Unit.

Dominique has spent much of her career serving the Dunbar community. She believes in treating people with respect and engaging with them on a personal level. “I don’t put myself as just working here. I’m a part of this village,” she explained.

Building Trust Through Community Engagement

Dominique’s work extends beyond traditional policing. She has dedicated much of her time to mentoring kids and working with the Police Athletic League. Her efforts have helped build trust between the police and the community.

“At the end of the day, you have an opportunity to do better and be better. And that’s what I normally tell kids,” she said. Her approach has inspired many young people to strive for greatness.

In 2014, Dominique was honored as Police Officer of the Year for her outstanding service. This recognition was a precursor to her recent promotion, which she sees as a chance to inspire others.

Leading by Example as a Sergeant

As a sergeant, Dominique now supervises a patrol team for the FMPD. She hopes her journey will inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

“You can be anything. Everything. President. The next chief. The next sergeant. So, to me, it is about the time, the work that you put into it,” she said. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and dedication.

Dominique’s historic promotion is not just a personal achievement but a milestone for the Fort Myers community. Her leadership and commitment to service continue to make a lasting impact.
