Breaking Barriers in Military Aviation
Dr. Kamin Samuel made history as the U.S. Navy’s first Black female helicopter pilot. She piloted the CH-46 Sea Knight, an aircraft known for its durability in military missions. Her journey from a curious teenager trying on her brother’s ROTC gear to a trailblazer in aviation is nothing short of inspiring.
During a recent episode of the American Legion’s Tango Alpha Lima Podcast, Samuel shared insights into her groundbreaking career. She emphasized that, at the time, there were no preconceived expectations about a Black woman piloting helicopters. This allowed her to define her own path based on excellence and dedication.
“I was really blessed to be the first. Nobody had any prejudices or preconceived notions about whether I would be good or bad,” Samuel explained.
She saw her role as an opportunity to set a high standard for those who would come after her. Her focus was on being the best, ensuring that future Black female pilots were expected to perform at a high level from day one.
Overcoming Hardships Beyond the Military
Despite her success in the Navy, Samuel faced serious challenges after transitioning to civilian life. Her business collapsed, leading to financial struggles, including bankruptcy and foreclosure. The pressure was overwhelming, and at one point, she battled suicidal thoughts.
However, she used the resilience and discipline she developed in the military to fight back. She committed to survival, choosing not to let failure define her.
“One thing I took too seriously was failure. I had failed, therefore I thought I was a failure. But I learned that what I had tried just didn’t work. That’s all. Let’s try again. Let’s keep moving.”
This mindset shift became a turning point in her life. She transformed her failures into stepping stones, rebuilding her career and personal confidence.
A Passion for Helping Others Succeed
Today, Samuel is an international business transformation coach and therapist. She specializes in helping individuals shift their mindsets, believe in their potential, and achieve their goals. Her coaching is rooted in the idea that people often focus on their weaknesses rather than their strengths.
She uses character strength assessments, like those found on viacharacter.org, to help individuals recognize their abilities. She has worked with job seekers, military leaders, and even executives at Pixar to help them discover and leverage their strongest qualities.
“Most people can tell me their weaknesses. They can’t tell me their strengths. But if we can live in our strengths, that’s the best we can do.”
Through her work, Samuel continues to inspire people to push past their limits and achieve greatness.
