A Trailblazer in Alabama High School Sports
Danny Treadwell, the first Black athlete to compete in the Alabama State High School Basketball Tournament, passed away this week in Chicago. He was 77 years old.
In 1966, Treadwell led Butler High School to the Class 4A state title at Foster Auditorium, a moment that remains historic. His team narrowly defeated Sidney Lanier High School 60-57 in the final game. Despite facing racial taunts throughout the tournament, Treadwell’s performance was extraordinary. He earned a first-team All-Tournament selection, showcasing his immense talent and resilience.
John Pruett, an Alabama Sports Writers Association Hall of Famer, once described Treadwell’s courage as unmatched. “His bravery under pressure was like nothing I’d seen in high school athletics,” Pruett wrote in a 2006 Huntsville Times series.
Overcoming Adversity on and off the Court
Treadwell’s journey to the championship was far from easy. Competing in a racially charged environment, he faced significant hostility. Yet, he remained composed, letting his skill and determination shine through.
Steve Monger, a contemporary of Treadwell, reflected on his legacy. “Danny was an inspiration and a trailblazer to all of us at Butler High School. In his quiet way, he set a great example of how to handle adversity,” he said.
Even years after his high school triumph, Treadwell’s story was retold in Keith Dunnavant’s 2013 documentary, Three Days at Foster. The film highlighted not just his athletic achievements but also the broader significance of his presence in a segregated sports world.
Honored for His Contributions to Sports and Society
In 2023, the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame recognized Treadwell with a Special Achievement Award. The honor celebrated his impact on Alabama high school sports and his role in advancing racial equality through his participation.
Treadwell’s courage paved the way for future generations of athletes. Lee Phillips, a fan who witnessed Treadwell’s championship win, said, “I will never forget seeing Danny and the Butler High School basketball team claim victory in 1966. Although the entire team won, it was a historic victory for Danny.”
A Life Remembered
Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on August 3, 1947, Treadwell lived a life marked by resilience and purpose. He passed away on January 14, 2025, at the University of Chicago Hospital. Though his passing is a loss, his legacy as a trailblazer and leader remains indelible.
Treadwell’s story continues to inspire athletes and communities, reminding everyone of the power of courage and determination in the face of adversity.
