A Historic Leader Honored by the Haringey Community

The Haringey community recently came together to honor Erline Prescott, the borough’s first Black female Mayor, who passed away in November 2024. Friends, family, and colleagues gathered to pay their final respects at her funeral, reflecting on her remarkable legacy.

Erline Prescott served as a ward councillor for West Green and dedicated her career to improving the lives of Haringey’s children and young people. Her historic appointment as the borough’s first Black female Mayor in 1994 marked a turning point in local politics. She later served a second term as Mayor from 2003 to 2004.

Haringey Council acknowledged her passing with a minute’s silence during the November Full Council meeting, a gesture symbolizing the community’s deep respect for her contributions.

Championing the Rights of Young People

Throughout her career, Erline was a passionate advocate for youth empowerment. She focused on programs and initiatives that championed the rights and well-being of Haringey’s young residents.

“She cared deeply about creating opportunities for young people to thrive,” shared a former colleague. Her efforts extended beyond her official duties, leaving a lasting impact on many families in the borough.
