Broadway’s iconic musical Wicked is making history once again. Lencia Kebede will take over the role of Elphaba, becoming the first Black actress to play the character full-time on Broadway. Kebede’s debut is set for March 4, 2025, marking a significant moment for both the production and the broader theater world.
Kebede’s Historic Role as Elphaba
Lencia Kebede’s rise to the role of Elphaba follows in the footsteps of another groundbreaking achievement in Wicked. In 2022, Brittney Johnson became the first Black actress to play the role of Glinda full-time on Broadway. Kebede’s new role continues this trend of diversity in Broadway’s most popular musical, Wicked, which has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide since its debut in 2003.
Before landing this iconic part, Kebede had already made a name for herself in the theater world. Most recently, she played Angelica in the National Tour of Hamilton. She has also toured both nationally and internationally, performing as Joanne in Rent. Her versatility and talent have earned her recognition, with her career spanning a variety of notable roles.
A Talented Cast for Broadway’s Wicked Revival
Kebede will be joined on stage by Allie Trimm, who will take on the role of Glinda after serving as the standby for the character from December 2021 to March 2024. The two will bring fresh energy to Wicked, a show that continues to captivate audiences at the Gershwin Theatre. Together, they will begin their roles on March 4, 2025, after the final performances of the current stars, Mary Kate Morrisey and Alexandra Socha, on March 2.
Wicked has been a mainstay of Broadway for over two decades. Its success can be attributed to its captivating music, powerful story, and unforgettable performances. The production, with a score by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide, performed in 16 countries, and translated into six languages.
A Legacy of Representation on Broadway
Kebede’s casting as Elphaba not only marks a personal milestone but also highlights a broader trend in Broadway’s increasing push for diversity. Following the success of the Wicked film, where Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba was widely praised, Kebede’s casting further solidifies the growing representation of Black talent in major Broadway roles.
As Wicked continues to inspire and entertain audiences, Lencia Kebede’s arrival in the role of Elphaba is yet another reminder of how theater continues to evolve, making space for new voices and celebrating diverse stories.
